United Government of Graduate Students
Authored by: Stephanie Martin Economics Representative, Graduate Senator
The Colorado Legislature is examining three separate bills this session dealing with conceal and carry of weapons in Colorado. These bills currently only prohibit a conceal permit from applying to public K-12 schools and buildings with electronic weapons security screening. There are many students, faculty and staff on the University of Colorado Campus who would be eligible for a conceal and carry permit and who would be allowed to carry these weapons on the campus and into classes at the University of Colorado under the current proposed legislation. There are also many students, faculty and staff on the University of Colorado campus who are opposed to allowing conceal and carry permits to apply to the University of Colorado.
Whereas: The current Colorado Assembly proposed legislation does not include an exemption for higher education facilities for conceal and carry hand gun permits.
Whereas: The current Colorado Assembly proposed legislation would allow concealed handguns in classrooms and common buildings on the University of Colorado, Boulder campus.
Whereas: Many students believe that concealed weapons in classrooms, other educational facilities and social buildings at the University of Colorado represent a perceived danger to other students as well as to faculty, instructors and graduate teachers.
Whereas: It is a duty for the United Government of Graduate Students to work to protect the interests of University of Colorado graduate students as both students and teachers in the state of Colorado.
THEREFORE, BE IT Resolved by the United Government of Graduate Students, THAT,
SECTION 1: The United Government of Graduate Students is opposed to allowing concealed weapons to be carried on the University of Colorado campus.
SECTION 2: The United Government of Graduate Students calls on the State of Colorado General Assembly in include an exemption for higher education facilities into any current or future concealed weapons legislation.
SECTION 3: The United Government of Graduate Students condemns any Colorado General Assembly legislation that would allow concealed weapons to be carried at an educational institution.
SECTION 4: This resolution takes effect upon passage.
