Coverage Outside of Buff Gold Insurance

It is certainly possible to have insurance other than the insurance offered by the university. For students who do not have tuition waivers, this insurance is often less expensive, since your department would not be covering any of the university policy. Most students find that this coverage is more comprehensive, and gives them a wider freedom of doctors to see. It is also possible to purchase dental and vision insurance outside the school. This is often important since none of the university's health plans have dental or vision insurance coverage.

CU cannot force you to choose Buff Gold, but they can, and do, require that you have some form of health insurance. Therefore, you are automatically enrolled in the Buff Gold policy unless you prove to them, each semester, that you have other insurance. Be sure to remember to do this.

Many students worry that they will lose the convenience of Wardenburg Health Center's on-campus location. This is not the case. Wardenburg is a health care provider, just like any other. You can still be seen on campus if you are a student, and they will accept outside health insurance.

If you do have a health insurance waiver, it is important to remember that you can still purchase outside health insurance, however it is extremely unlikely that your department will contribute to it.

Here are some useful links to learn more about health insurance outside of CU. This is by no means a complete list. There are many different plans in this area; these are just a few to help you get started.
